FAQs

What is Child Dedication?

It is an opportunity for the parent/child to make a public commitment before God, your church, and your family that it is your desire to raise and nurture your child in the ways of God. It is our heart to partner with you as your child grows and develops their own personal relationship with God. The dedication ceremony allows you to celebrate this new life that God has entrusted to you and for the church body to stand with you in prayer.

Is Child Dedication different from Water Baptism?

Both Water Baptism and Child Dedication are Biblical practices that we follow at City First Church. Child Dedication is a decision the parents make at the very beginning of their new baby’s life. Water Baptism is a decision made by the individual as a way to express their personal commitment to Christ. Because this commitment requires a level of cognitive and developmental readiness, we ask that children be at least 12 years old to be baptized. Proverbs 20:25 issues a significant caution against the danger of making a vow before adequate knowledge, forethought and reflection have been given. In an effort to prevent young people from making a premature commitment that they may not fully understand, this minimum age has been established. Special arrangements for families choosing to be baptized together can be made.
