📖 Palm Sunday in the Gospels

• Matthew 21:1–11

• Mark 11:1–11

• Luke 19:28–44

• John 12:12–19

🐑 Jesus — The Lamb of God

John 1:29:

“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

🔥 God’s Instructions to the Israelites

1. Select a spotless lamb

Exodus 12:5:

“Your lamb shall be without blemish.”

2. Sacrifice the lamb

Exodus 12:6:

“Then the whole assembly of the community of Israel must slaughter their lamb.”

Exodus 12:26:

“When I see the blood… I will pass over you.”

🕊️ A Powerful Detail

Before Palm Sunday was called Palm Sunday, it was named:

“Lamb Selection Day.”

🌿 The Triumphal Entry

Matthew 21:6–11:

“The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.”

❓ Why is it significant that Jesus is riding on a donkey?

1) It’s a fulfillment of prophecy

Zechariah 9:9:

“Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt.”

2) It’s Jesus’ public declaration of who He is

Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting,

“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said,

“This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

🧥 A Cultural Picture

In the ancient world, laying garments before someone meant:

• “You are worthy to walk over whatever belongs to me.”

🙌 “Hosanna!”

Hosanna means: ➡️ SAVE US!

3) Share the Lamb

Exodus 12:4:

If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor.

Discussion Questions 📝:

  1. Why do you think God chose to reveal Himself to us through stories in the Bible rather than just giving us a list of rules and instructions?
  2. in Exodus 12:5, God requires a spotless lamb for the Passover sacrifice. How does this requirement connect to Jesus being called the “Lamb of God” in John 1:29?
  3. On Palm Sunday, people laid down their outer garments before Jesus. What was the significance of this action, and what does it teach us about true worship?
  4. The people shouting “Hosanna” were expecting Jesus to save them from their earthly problems, but God had a bigger plan. How can this help us trust God when His answers to our prayer look different than we expected?
