Bridles, Rudders, & Sparks

Nearly a quarter of James’ message in the New Testament focuses on the power of our words. Through the images of the bit, the rudder, and the spark, James reminds us that while the tongue is small, it can control the direction of our lives, steer us through storms, or set entire forests on fire. We can’t control every circumstance, but we can choose words that bring life, faith, and blessing!

Notes 📓✏️:

“When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.

Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”
James 3:3-8 (NIV)

The bit.

The rudder.

The spark.

1. The bit.

James is saying – If you can control your mouth, you can control the direction of your life.

2. The rudder.

James even says. “The ship goes wherever the pilot wants to go.”

The rudder doesn’t remove the storm – it determines my destination in it.

What is your private speech like?

3. The spark.

Only YOU can prevent forest fires.

“It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
James 3:6

The word “hell” here is translated Gehenna

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”
James 3:9,10

If you never think about your words, you are probably saying the wrong things!

Pay close attention to everything that comes out of your mouth over the next 24 hours.

What are you speaking over others?

What are you declaring over yourself?

“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Matthew 12:34 (ESV)

Discussion Questions 📝:

  2. Pastor Jen mentions that “repeated negativity leads to a slow drift towards cynicism, while repeated gratitude leads to a slow drift towards faith.” How have you seen this play out in your own life?
  3. Based on James 3:9-10, why do you think it’s especially problematic for Christians to praise God and then speak negatively about people made in His image?
  4. Do you believe it’s true that private speech matters as much as our public speech? How do the words we speak when alone or with close family impact our overall character and spiritual growth?
